Legacy hawker centres such as Tiong Bahru Food Centre and Ghim Moh Hawker Centre are where delicious, traditional food passed down by pioneer hawkers can be found. According to the NEA list of hawker centres published on their website, there are 107 such hawker centres in the heartlands and 7 new hawker centres managed by social enterprises - Social Enterprise Hawker Centres (SEHCs). At SEHCs, hawkers are usually new, unlike those at legacy hawker centres where hawkers have been selling for decades. However, Fei Siong Food Management has brought in a variety of good food to Ci Yuan Hawker Centre (an SEHC), which it operates, including Hainanese Chicken Rice, Mee Hoon Kueh, Char Kway Teow, Hainanese Curry Rice, Fish Soup, Lor Mee, Satay Bee Hoon, Vegetarian Food, Hokkien Mee, Nasi Lemak, Mee Rebus, Yam Cake, You Char Kueh, Goreng Pisang, Black Glutinous Rice, Tau Suan, Chendol, Wanton Noodle, Satay, Laksa, Duck Rice, Japanese Cuisine, Western Food, Prawn Noodle, Roti Prata, Mee Goreng, Zhi Char, Economical Rice, Carrot Cake, Fried Oyster, Mee Pok, and Bah Chor Mee.

Curry Rice

Hainanese curry rice is a traditional and hearty dish featuring a basic combination of pork chop, sunny-side-up egg, and cabbage. For a delightful variation, I opted for two additional protein choices: fish and braised tofu, complemented by long beans and binjal vegetables.

When it first opened in 2015, the Mee Pok stall quickly became the best-selling spot at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre, drawing the longest queues. However, business saw a decline over the years due to frequent turnover of cooks. Fortunately, it experienced a resurgence with the arrival of the right "Mee Pok Man."

Ci Yuan Hawker Centre: A Modern and Comfortable Dining Destination
Ci Yuan Hawker Centre, situated within the Ci Yuan Community Club building, offers a comfortable dining experience with its well-ventilated environment. Located on the ground floor, it benefits from shielding against direct sunlight by the Community Club's three upper floors and perimeter red-white awning shades.Compared to other legacy NEA hawker centres and SEHCs (Social Enterprise Hawker Centres) like Bedok Bus Interchange Food Centre, Tampines Hub Hawkers, and Pasir Ris Hawker Centre, Ci Yuan stands out with its highest ceiling height and ample natural light provided by high bay lights. The cleverly designed layout features stalls that allow for natural ventilation from all sides and exceptionally wide aisles, possibly the broadest among hawker centres and food courts. This layout creates a sense of spaciousness and enhances the overall dining ambience, offering patrons a pleasant dining experience.

Ci Yuan Hawker Centre: A Pioneer in SEHCs with Exceptional Management
Ci Yuan Hawker Centre is one of the earliest hawker centres to operate under the National Environment Agency's (NEA) SEHCs guidelines. Managed by Fei Siong Food Management, a prominent player among SEHCs Hawker Managements (including Koufu, NTUC Foodfare, Timbre+Hawkers, and OTMH by Kopitiam ..), it upholds high standards in cleanliness and efficiency.Fei Siong Food Management is renowned for deploying well-trained and neatly attired elderly male and female table cleaning teams, some even sporting lipstick, across their food centres. This team is known for their hardworking and efficient service, maintaining cleanliness with clean tablecloths.

At Ci Yuan Hawker Centre and notably at Fei Siong's Malaysia Boleh foodcourt in the basement of Ang Mo Kio Hub (53 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, #B2-41/42), trays and crockery are swiftly cleared from tray return stations to the Central Washing Area. This prompt service helps keep the tray return stations empty most times, effectively preventing the invasion of crows, pigeons, and mynas that commonly afflict many hawker centres.

Ci Yuan Hawker Centre and Community Club: A Vibrant Community Hub
Originally planned as the site for Hougang Primary School, the area transformed into a large field and community space. For eighteen years, the undeveloped field hosted various activities such as Taiji sessions, weekend football training and tournaments, archery, dog agility events, and Hougang Secondary School's National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) training and tests. In 2011, the then Aljunied-Hougang GRC, led by former Foreign Minister George Yeo and MPs Yeo Guat Guan, Zainul Abidin, Lee Hwee Hua, and Cynthia Phua, held a memorable Ching Gay performance with stunning fireworks at the Ci Yuan community field. This area, now home to Ci Yuan Hawker Centre and Community Club, is situated close to surrounding HDB residential blocks. After re-zoning for the 2015 General Election under MP Daryl David of Ang Mo Kio GRC, the ground-breaking ceremony for Ci Yuan Hawker Centre and Community Club was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on 19 October 2013. The completion of the roof superstructure was celebrated at the Topping-Up Ceremony on 8 November 2014. Officially opened on 20 September 2015 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, shortly after his election victory, Ci Yuan Hawker Centre and Community Club has since become a beloved venue for community gatherings and enjoying good food.
